When I asked for help, one of the other girls, Jenni, took him from me, turned him over and started beating his back. I was frozen at this point, still calm, but in disbelief of what was happening. She told one of the other girls to go get help. We kept looking at his face to see if he was blue and were desperately waiting for crying. He eventually spit up through his mouth and nose. It finally dawned on me to get the bulb syringe out and suction him. At some point during this, his lips and mouth started looking blue and purple so 911 was called. We sat in the floor and suctioned him but he still really wasn't crying or doing much better. The back of his legs also were brown and splotchy. This is when I lost it! Jenni started praying to God and I truly felt God's presence in the room. It was as if he wrapped his arms around me and my baby.
Not long after, the paramedics arrived. Luke had started to look a little better but was still having trouble breathing. They were able to suction a lot out and he finally let out a really good cry. I was never so happy to hear him cry! I rode with him in the ambulance to the hospital. The E.R. doctor did a chest x-ray, two breathing treatments, and a lower abdomen x-ray. They said he had a lot of air in his tummy which they thought was causing the breathing problems. After a few hours we were sent home and were told to see our doctor Monday. Needless to say, we didn't get much sleep the next few nights. His doctor believes it was due to acid reflux. He now is on more medication and new formula. We are thankful that this episode was not caused by a bigger issue.
I would never choose to experience an event like this but I can find the positive things that come from it. I am so thankful that I hadn't already gotten in my car to drive home and not seen Luke in distress. God's timing is perfect! Instead, I was at church surrounded by people that could help me and I was only a few blocks from the hospital. There were friends there to help take care of my older two children. Most important, there were lots of people there to pray for us! A couple from our Sunday school class came to the E.R. to check on us and even went and got lunch for us. God showed me that even though we live far away from our family that we have a "family" here. I am grateful for all the people that helped us and truly loved on our family! God is So good, all the time!
Praise God for protecting our sweet boy!
